Retinal imaging using a digital retinal camera is the gold standard to:
• Detect microscopic changes to the retina which may be an early indication of eye disease.
• Capture images used in the monitoring of established diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetes and Age Related Macular Degeneration.
• Refine record keeping – creating a permanent and accurate record of the condition of your eyes.
• Provide the best technique to show changes in your eyes – to help you see what we can see – and facilitate prompt, accurate and timely referrals if appropriate.
For many years at Chandlers, we have routinely carried out visual field screening for most adult eyes and we now want to further enhance the eye examination available to our patients. Up to now we have examined the back of the eye using a hand held instrument; retinal imaging doesn’t replace this but offers a better, wider view with enhanced magnification to supplement the existing technique. Most importantly for you is that this allows accurate comparisons between views taken at repeat visits, allowing us to see changes which may develop.
The technique is completely painless and most patients are fascinated by the images we take!

The use of coloured overlay filters for the removal of ‘visual stress’ in both children and adults is a recognised technique to improve visual performance. Although primarily aimed at dyslexics, it is now thought to be of benefit in many conditions including M.S. and M.E. in adults.
There is no specific colour which will help any specific individual so a range of tints is presented and the reading rate response is used to assess how beneficial a tint is to that person. The tint is then supplied as an overlay to be placed on top of the written piece and should mean that the ability to concentrate for longer and more comfortably is achieved.
The use of coloured overlays is not a service covered by the NHS, but we can arrange for one of our specialists to attend any of our practices, to see if this technique could be useful in addressing any special reading difficulties. Please ask for more information in the branch.

We know that it is often the way you are treated which inspires confidence in any professional. At Chandlers Opticians we hope you leave with the feeling of being treated as an individual.
But, did you know as well as providing you with excellent service, we also have some very sophisticated examination techniques to help keep your eyes healthy and monitor any possible deterioration. We like to assess visual fields (peripheral vision) in most adult eyes and we have retinal imaging cameras in all practices which can show subtle changes over time and alert us to the best management strategies.
In addition we have OCT scanning (Ocular Coherence Tomography) at our Godalming practice. OCT scans have, up until recently, only been available in hospital departments, but the use of this extremely simple technique can reveal early signs of glaucoma, macular disease and diabetic eye changes. Early referral can make treatment of these conditions much more successful. This is leading edge technology for opticians giving truly comprehensive eyecare.
